Craft Your First Nametag

Gather Your Materials

Before you can craft a nametag, collect the basic ingredients. You'll need paper, string, and iron. Paper can be made from sugar cane at a crafting table, string drops from spiders or can be obtained from breaking cobwebs, and iron is mined from iron ore underground.

Use the Crafting Table

Open your crafting table and look for the nametag recipe. Arrange your paper, string, and iron according to the recipe pattern shown in your crafting menu. Once placed correctly, the nametag will appear in the output slot. Drag it into your inventory.

Name Your First Mob

With nametag in hand, use an anvil to give it a custom name. Place the nametag in the anvil's input slot, type your desired name, and confirm. Now right-click any mob—pet or otherwise—with the named nametag to apply it. The mob will keep that name permanently and won't despawn, even if it's far from you.
