Create a Shift Layer for Extra Controls
Understanding Layers
Shift layers give you a second set of button mappings. When you hold your designated shift button, all your controller buttons perform different actions. This doubles your available controls without needing more buttons.
1. Open controller settings and find Input Layers
2. Locate the Shift Layer section
3. Assign a controller button as your shift modifier (typically a shoulder button works well)
4. Map actions to buttons that will only activate when shift is held
5. Return to the main layer and verify your primary controls are still mapped
6. Test in-game by holding shift and pressing mapped buttons
Practical Setup
Use your main layer for core gameplay: movement, jumping, attacking, and block placement. Reserve the shift layer for mod-specific features, commands, or less-frequent actions. For example, main layer might have your pickaxe, but shift+trigger could open a mod menu or activate a special ability. You can have multiple shift layers if your mod supports it, creating even more control combinations.
