Understand the Difference Between modpack_defaults and Your Config Folder

Two Separate Locations

Config Manager uses two directories:

  • /config/modpack_defaults – Contains the modpack creator's default configurations. These are read-only reference files.
  • /config – Your active configuration folder where mods actually read their settings.

How They Work Together

When you first install a modpack, Config Manager copies files from modpack_defaults to /config only if those files don't exist. This prevents overwriting your personal adjustments.

If you use the Update function, it copies from modpack_defaults to /config, overwriting your current settings with the packaged defaults.

Practical Example

If you customize a mod's config and then update your modpack, your changes in /config stay safe unless you explicitly choose Update. The modpack_defaults folder always contains what the modpack creator intended, letting you reset to those defaults anytime without losing the original reference.
