Monitor Your FPS and Frame Rate Stability
Viewing Current and Average FPS
The Compact F3 Plus overlay displays two important frame rate metrics:
- Current FPS: Your instantaneous frames per second, updated in real-time
- Average FPS: Your mean performance over a recent time window, smoothing out temporary spikes and dips
Watch both numbers to understand your game's stability. If current FPS bounces wildly while average stays steady, you're experiencing occasional stutters. If both drop together, you have a consistent performance problem.
Identifying Frame Rate Problems
1. Open the debug overlay during normal gameplay
2. Note your average FPS baseline
3. Perform demanding actions (load new chunks, enter crowded areas, use effects)
4. Compare the new FPS to your baseline
5. If FPS drops significantly, that activity is causing lag
Optimizing Based on Frame Data
Use FPS trends to guide optimization: if FPS tanks when loading new terrain, reduce render distance; if it drops in populated areas, lower entity rendering or mob counts. The compact display makes these diagnostics quick and non-intrusive.
