Common Network Mod: Developer Overview
What Common Network Mod Does
Common Network Mod is a technical library for mod developers rather than a gameplay mod. It provides shared code that simplifies writing mods for multiple loaders at once, so a single project can target both Forge and Fabric without duplicating networking logic.
Its main purpose is packet handling. The library streamlines creating and managing network packets, reducing the boilerplate normally required when supporting several loaders. It also enables cross-loader communication: a Forge client can talk to a Fabric server, and vice versa, which matters when players run different loader versions of the same mod.
The library is designed to work with Jared's MultiLoader Template, fitting into that project structure directly. Developers can additionally define their own handshake packets, allowing custom connection negotiation between client and server.
If you are a player, this mod does nothing on its own. It only becomes relevant when another mod depends on it, in which case you simply install it alongside that mod.
