Using Clear Stained Glass for Colored Windows and Light Effects

Pick colors by purpose

With clear stained glass, each color acts like a tinted transparent sheet. Use light colors (white, light gray, light blue, pink) for bright, airy windows that still let you see through. Use saturated colors (red, blue, green, purple) for bold accents, church-style windows, or team-colored builds. Dark colors read almost like tinted privacy glass.

Build steps

1. Decide the window shape, then fill it entirely with one stained glass color so the connected texture merges across the whole area.

2. For patterns, swap individual blocks to a second color. Each color forms its own merged region, so a checkerboard or stripe pattern stays crisp.

3. Combine with light sources behind the glass — glowstone, lanterns, or sea lanterns — so the color glows through and lights the room.

4. Layer glass in front of stained glass for depth, or use stained glass as a canopy over a garden to tint the light below.

Things to watch

Different colors do not merge into each other, so plan boundaries where you want them. Because the glass is clear, anything behind it is fully visible — hide ugly redstone or storage behind a solid wall, not behind your feature window. Test the look at night and in rain, since transparency changes how the build reads in different light.
