How to Carve a Block with the Chisel

Getting Started

Hold the Chisel in your hand and look at a block you want to decorate. Right-clicking a block with the Chisel opens a selection screen showing every available variant for that block type. The Chisel works on many vanilla and modded blocks, so try it on stone, wood planks, dirt, glass, and more.

Choosing a Variant

Once the selection screen is open, you will see a grid of preview icons. Each icon represents a different carved appearance for the same block. Click any icon to apply it instantly — the block in the world is replaced with the chosen variant, and the original block is consumed. If you want to cycle through variants quickly, you can also sneak-right-click to step through them one at a time without opening the full menu.

Practical Tips

  • Bring a stack of the base block with you; each carve consumes one block and produces one decorative variant.
  • Variants are not interchangeable with the base block in crafting recipes unless the mod explicitly supports it, so plan your builds accordingly.
  • If a block has no variants, the Chisel will simply do nothing — not every block in the game is supported.
  • You can chisel blocks in place, which makes retrofitting an existing build easy.
