Optimize Shader Performance on Low-End Hardware
Identify Performance Bottlenecks
Monitor your frame rate in different environments. Note whether performance drops occur in shadowed areas, near bright light sources, or over water. This helps pinpoint which shader features to adjust first.
Reduce Shadow Distance
Shadow rendering is often the most demanding feature. Lower shadow distance so shadows only render near the player, significantly improving frame rates. Distant terrain will lack shadows, but nearby areas remain detailed.
Disable or Minimize Bloom
Reduce bloom intensity to decrease glow processing. This is one of the quickest performance gains. You can still enjoy the fantasy aesthetic with moderate bloom settings.
Lower Water Effects
Disable or reduce caustics, wave animations, and reflection quality. Simpler water still looks better than vanilla Minecraft while consuming fewer resources.
Adjust Render Distance
While not a shader setting, reducing render distance complements shader optimization. Combined with lowered shadow distance, this keeps frame rates stable.
Test Incrementally
Change one setting at a time and measure frame rate impact. Find the balance where your system runs smoothly while maintaining the visual improvements that drew you to Butter Shaders.
