How to Assemble Fossils from Skulls and Bodies

The fossil pieces

This mod adds fossils for several creatures, including Chicken, Creeper, Guardian, Ocelot, and Sheep. Each one comes in parts: a Skull and a Body. These are separate items, so a complete fossil is something you assemble rather than dig up whole.

Getting the parts

Fossil parts come out of excavation. Brush Suspicious Dirt and Fossiliferous Dirt, and check the loot from fossil-bearing structures. Because skulls and bodies are separate drops, you will often have a skull with no matching body for a while. Keep everything; do not throw out "useless" halves.

Putting a fossil together

Once you have both the Skull and the Body for the same creature, combine them to form the complete fossil. The assembled fossil is the display piece: place it in your base as a trophy, or use it as the centerpiece of a museum build. Line up several complete fossils (Chicken, Creeper, Guardian, Ocelot, Sheep) on Chiseled Bone Blocks for a proper paleontology exhibit.

Efficiency notes

  • Label your fossil chest by creature so you can see at a glance which half you are missing.
  • If you keep getting bodies but no skulls, vary where you dig; different sites seem to favor different parts.
