Troubleshoot Visual Glitches or Artifacts

Identify the Problem

Common issues include shadow banding (visible lines in shadows), flickering shadows, or incorrect shadow placement. Note when and where glitches appear—during specific times of day, near certain blocks, or in particular biomes.

Reset Shader Settings to Defaults

Return all shader options to their default values. This eliminates custom configuration as a cause. If glitches persist, the issue may be hardware-related or a conflict with other mods.

Verify Compatibility

Better Default Shaders is designed for vanilla compatibility, but conflicts can occur with mods that heavily modify lighting or rendering. Try disabling other visual mods temporarily to isolate the problem.

Adjust Quality Settings

Shadow artifacts sometimes appear at extreme quality settings. Try lowering shadow quality or distance slightly—this often resolves banding and flickering without sacrificing the overall effect.

Check Your Graphics Driver

Outdated GPU drivers can cause shader rendering issues. Ensure your graphics drivers are current for your hardware.

Report Persistent Issues

If problems continue after troubleshooting, document which blocks or situations trigger glitches and report details to the mod community for investigation.
