Reduce Lag While Maintaining Visual Quality
Identify Performance Bottlenecks
Use F3 debug screen to monitor framerate. If it drops below your target, focus on the most demanding features: shadow rendering, ambient occlusion, and reflections.
Disable Non-Essential Effects
Start by turning off Screen-Space Reflections or Ambient Occlusion—these provide visual polish but aren't essential. The shader still looks good without them.
Lower Shadow Settings Strategically
Reduce Shadow Map Resolution and Shadow Distance before disabling shadows entirely. Shorter shadow distances mean shadows only appear near the player, cutting rendering load significantly.
Reduce Render Distance Carefully
While not a shader setting, lowering your render distance in Video Settings helps more than any shader tweak. Start at 12 chunks and increase until framerates suffer.
Test Incrementally
Change one setting at a time and play for 2–3 minutes in varied terrain. This reveals which adjustments matter most for your system. Some settings have minimal visual impact but large performance cost—skip those first.
