How to Explore Large Awesome Dungeon Builds Without Getting Lost

Mapping as You Go

Big structures like the abandoned deep palace, witch castle, and usine have winding interiors that are easy to get turned around in. Before entering, write down the surface coordinates of the entrance. Inside, use torches consistently — for example, place them on the right-hand wall as you descend so you can follow them back out. If the build has multiple floors, drop a distinctive block (like a colored wool or a sign) at each staircase so you can tell levels apart. A compass pointed at your base or a lodestone can also help you reorient once you exit.

Managing Risk in Deep Builds

Large dungeons often combine spawners, traps, and vertical drops, so do not sprint through unfamiliar rooms. Test floors for holes, and bridge over gaps rather than jumping. Keep a water bucket for fall protection and a bed or respawn anchor set nearby if the structure is far from home. If you are playing with others, assign one person to hold the entrance and keep it lit so the group has a safe fallback. When you finish a section, seal it off with blocks so cleared rooms do not repopulate with mobs while you explore deeper.
