How to Deal With Skeletons That Switch to Melee Combat

Understanding the Transformation

Unlike vanilla skeletons that always use bows, Awakened skeletons will drop their ranged weapons and pick up melee weapons like swords or spears. Once they're holding a close-combat weapon, their AI switches entirely—they become aggressive sword fighters instead of keeping distance.

Combat Approach

When you see a skeleton holding a melee weapon, treat it like an Awakened zombie: expect blocking, parrying, and aggressive pursuit. They retain their speed and agility, making them unpredictable opponents.

The key difference is that skeletons are lighter and faster than zombies. Don't try to out-trade them in damage; instead, use hit-and-run tactics. Strike once or twice, then immediately create distance. Use the environment to break line of sight and force them to chase you through obstacles.

Prevention Strategy

If you encounter a skeleton before it picks up a weapon, eliminate it from range or destroy the melee weapon on the ground before it equips it. This prevents the transformation entirely and keeps the fight in your favor.
