Fixing Redstone That Behaves Differently After Installing Alternate Current
Why behaviour changes
Vanilla redstone has a known quirk (MC-11193) where update order depends on location, so two identical circuits in different spots can behave differently. AC emits block and shape updates in a deterministic, non-locational order. That fixes the bug, but it also means any contraption you tuned around the old inconsistent order may now resolve differently.
Diagnosing and fixing
1. Reproduce the failure in isolation. Copy just the misbehaving sub-circuit somewhere flat and power it.
2. Look for race conditions: two components that get powered in the same tick and both try to act. Under vanilla, location decided the winner; under AC, the order is fixed but may not match what you built around.
3. Add a deliberate delay to break the tie. Insert a repeater or a one-tick pulse extender so the two actions no longer compete in the same tick.
4. Replace location-dependent tricks. If your design relied on a wire in one corner updating before a wire in another, restructure so the dependency is explicit rather than positional.
5. Re-test the full machine, not just the sub-circuit, since timing shifts can cascade.
When it is not AC's fault
If the circuit misbehaves the same way with AC removed, the problem is your logic, not the update order. Always confirm by toggling the mod before redesigning.
