How to Make Colored Lantern Variants

Understanding Color Variants

Additional Lanterns adds a colored version of nearly every lantern, most visibly the Black variants listed on the wiki. These are cosmetic recolors — they emit the same light as their base counterpart, so choose based on the palette of your build, not on stats.

Crafting a Colored Lantern

Craft the base lantern first (for example, a Cobblestone Lantern), then combine it with the dye or coloring ingredient the mod uses for that color in a crafting grid. The mod follows vanilla dye conventions, so the color you want usually maps to a standard dye. If the recipe doesn't show, verify you're using the correct base lantern — a Black Andesite Lantern needs an Andesite Lantern, not a plain stone one.

Matching Chains

Chains also come in material variants. Pair a colored lantern with a chain of the same base material for a uniform look, or use a contrasting chain to make the lantern pop. Chains are crafted from their material in a vertical pattern similar to vanilla chains.

Build Ideas

  • Use Black variants for moody nether or deepslate builds.
  • Mix gem lanterns (Amethyst, Diamond, Emerald) for magical or fantasy themes.
  • Line a corridor with alternating colors for a striped lighting effect.

Notes

Colored variants don't change light level, blast resistance, or any other stat — they're purely visual, so feel free to experiment freely.
