How to Light a Build Without Visible Light Sources
The Hidden-Light Approach
Sometimes you want a room bright but don't want lanterns cluttering the walls. Additional Lanterns gives you many material options, which makes it easy to tuck a lantern into a spot where it blends in — inside a pillar, behind a stair, or under a slab.
Step-by-Step
1. Choose a lantern whose material matches the surrounding block. A Deepslate Bricks Lantern disappears into a deepslate wall; a Quartz Lantern vanishes into white builds.
2. Carve a one-block cavity in the wall or floor where the lantern will sit.
3. Place the lantern inside the cavity.
4. Cover the opening with a slab, stair, or trapdoor that lets light through visually but hides the source.
Using Chains for Concealment
Hang a chain from a ceiling and attach a lantern at the top of a room, then cap the chain with a trapdoor or carpet so only the glow shows. This works well in libraries and throne rooms.
Material Matching Tips
- Stone family (Andesite, Diorite, Granite) suits castles and dungeons.
- Wood family (Crimson) suits nether builds.
- Gem family (Amethyst, Diamond, Emerald) suits magical or treasure rooms.
Caveats
Hidden lanterns still count as light sources, so mobs won't spawn nearby. If you want a dark-but-lit look, use fewer lanterns and space them out.
