How to Hang Lanterns from Chains Correctly
Why Chains Matter
Chains let you suspend lanterns in mid-air, which is essential for high ceilings, mineshafts, and grand halls where a floor-mounted lantern wouldn't reach. Additional Lanterns provides chains in the same material families as its lanterns, so you can keep a consistent theme.
Building a Hanging Lantern
1. Place a solid block where you want the chain to attach (ceiling, beam, or overhang).
2. Right-click the chain onto the underside of that block. Each right-click extends the chain downward by one segment.
3. When the chain reaches the height you want, right-click the lantern onto the bottom chain link.
4. If you need to adjust, break the bottom chain link — the lantern and links above it stay put.
Spacing and Aesthetics
Chains can be placed in a straight vertical line only; they won't bend around corners. For diagonal or curved runs, use multiple short chains anchored to separate blocks. Vary chain length between lanterns to create a staggered, organic look.
Practical Uses
- Light a tall atrium without floor clutter.
- Mark a path through a cave by hanging lanterns at eye level.
- Combine with fences or trapdoors for industrial-style fixtures.
Troubleshooting
If a chain won't place, make sure the block above is solid and you're aiming at its bottom face. Chains don't need support from the sides.
