How to Craft and Place Your First Additional Lantern

Getting the Base Materials

Additional Lanterns builds on the vanilla lantern recipe, so you'll need the usual ingredients plus the material that decides the lantern's look. Start by mining or gathering the stone, wood, or gem type you want — for example cobblestone, andesite, basalt, or amethyst. You'll also need a light source component (the same kind vanilla lanterns use) and a chain if you want to hang it.

Crafting the Lantern

Open a crafting grid and arrange the ingredients the same way you would for a vanilla lantern, but substitute the metal with your chosen material. The mod keeps recipes consistent across materials, so once you learn one pattern you can swap the block type to get a matching lantern. If a recipe doesn't appear, check that you're using the correct variant (for example, cobblestone versus cobbled deepslate).

Placing and Hanging

Place the lantern on a solid block like a normal light source, or right-click it onto the underside of a chain to hang it. Chains from this mod connect vertically and can be stacked to lower the lantern. Use a matching chain material for a clean look, or mix materials for contrast. Sneak-place to avoid opening interfaces on nearby blocks.

Quick Tips

  • Lanterns emit the same light level as vanilla lanterns.
  • Colored variants (like Black variants) are cosmetic only — pick whichever matches your build.
  • Break a chain with any tool to recover it; the lantern drops separately.
