How to Choose the Right Lantern Material for Your Build

Match the Palette

With dozens of material variants, the biggest decision is aesthetic. Walk through your build and note the dominant blocks, then pick lanterns from the same family. A basalt-and-blackstone nether fortress looks best with Basalt or Blackstone Lanterns; a coastal cottage suits Prismarine or Quartz.

Material Families at a Glance

  • Stone: Andesite, Diorite, Granite, Cobblestone, Cobbled Deepslate, Deepslate Bricks, Mossy Cobblestone, Brick, Red Sandstone, End Stone, Purpur, Obsidian, Nether Brick, Red Nether Brick.
  • Wood/Nether: Crimson.
  • Metal: Copper (plus Exposed, Oxidized, and Ordinary Copper variants), Gold, Iron (Rough Iron), Netherite, Diamond, Emerald, Amethyst.
  • Bone: Bone Lantern for skeletal or desert themes.

Colored Overlays

Every family also has a Black variant (and the mod supports other colors via dye). Use Black variants to darken a palette without changing the block shape.

Practical Selection Rules

1. If the build is monochrome, pick one material and stick to it.

2. If the build is busy, use a contrasting lantern to draw the eye.

3. For outdoor paths, choose a durable-looking material like Cobblestone or Deepslate.

4. For interiors, gem and gold lanterns add warmth.

Don't Overthink It

All lanterns share the same light level, so the only real cost of a wrong choice is the look. Swap them out freely as your build evolves.
