Overview

Tough As Nails is a survival-based mod that increases the difficulty of Minecraft by adding two primary survival mechanics: Body Temperature and Thirst. Players must manage these new bars alongside health and hunger, making exploration and settlement much more strategic. The mod is designed to integrate seamlessly with vanilla Minecraft and other environmental mods like Biomes O' Plenty and Serene Seasons.

In modern versions (1.20.1 and 1.21.1), the mod focuses on environmental hazards rather than adding new mobs. The environment itself becomes the enemy, with extreme biomes and weather conditions posing a constant threat to the player's life.

Frequently asked questions

How do I drink water?
Use a filled canteen or bottle by holding it and using it, which consumes one drink and restores thirst. Water Bottles, Purified Water Bottles, and all filled canteens (Leather through Netherite) can be drunk this way.
How do I get an Empty Leather Canteen?
Craft it using the crafting_shaped recipe for Empty Leather Canteens. It is the base canteen tier and can be filled at water sources to become a Leather Water Canteen.
How do I upgrade my canteen to a higher tier?
Use the smithing_transform recipe type to upgrade canteens between tiers (Leather, Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, Netherite). Each tier has Empty, Water, Dirty Water, and Purified Water variants.
How do I purify water?
Use the Water Purifier block, which processes water via the toughasnails:water_purifying recipe type. It converts Dirty Water Bottles and Dirty Water Canteens into Purified Water Bottles and Purified Water Canteens.
How do I use the Water Purifier?
Place the Water Purifier block and insert dirty water items; it applies the toughasnails:water_purifying recipe to output purified water. Purified water restores more thirst than dirty water.
How do I collect rainwater?
Place the Rain Collector block, which gathers water during rain. The collected water can be used to fill canteens and bottles.
How do I stay cool?
Wear heat-resistant armor such as the Leaf Poncho, Leaf Pants, Leaf Greaves, and Leaf Veil. Use the Temperature Gauge to monitor your temperature and the Thermoregulator block to regulate it.
How do I stay warm?
Wear insulating armor including the Wool Hood, Wool Parka, Wool Pants, and Wool Boots. The Temperature Gauge shows your current temperature so you can adjust gear accordingly.
How do I stay cool in the Nether?
Equip the full Leaf armor set (Leaf Veil, Leaf Poncho, Leaf Greaves, Leaf Pants) to resist heat. Drink cooling juices like Cactus Juice, Melon Juice, or Pumpkin Juice to help manage thirst and temperature.
How do I heal?
Drink juices such as Apple Juice, Melon Juice, Pumpkin Juice, Sweet Berry Juice, Glow Berry Juice, Chorus Fruit Juice, or Cactus Juice, and eat Ice Cream or Charc-O's. Staying hydrated with purified water also supports health recovery.
What is the Temperature Gauge for?
The Temperature Gauge is a block that displays your current body temperature. Use it to determine whether you need warming gear (Wool set) or cooling gear (Leaf set).
What does the Thermoregulator do?
The Thermoregulator is a block that regulates temperature in its vicinity. Place it near your base to counteract extreme heat or cold while wearing appropriate armor.
