How to Drink Water and Use Canteens

Filling a Canteen

Craft a canteen from a tier material, then hold it and interact with a water source block to fill it. A filled canteen becomes a Water Canteen of that tier: Leather Water Canteen, Copper Water Canteen, Iron Water Canteen, Gold Water Canteen, Diamond Water Canteen, or Netherite Water Canteen. Drinking from a Water Canteen restores thirst. If the source is not clean, you get the Dirty Water Canteen version instead, which is unsafe to drink until purified.

Bottles and Purified Water

Dirty Water Bottle and Purified Water Bottle work the same way at bottle scale. Fill a bottle at a water source to get Dirty Water Bottle, then run it through a Water Purifier to convert it to Purified Water Bottle. Purified Water Bottle and the Purified Water Canteen tiers are the safe drinking forms.

Canteen Tiers

Empty canteens exist for Leather, Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite. Higher tiers hold their water state as a matching item, so an Empty Iron Canteen fills into an Iron Water Canteen, an Iron Dirty Water Canteen, or an Iron Purified Water Canteen. Keep a filled canteen in your hotbar so you can drink without stopping to craft. Carry a spare Empty canteen so you can refill at the next source you pass.
