Overview

The Falling Leaves Mod is a visually appealing addition to Minecraft that introduces a subtle yet impactful particle system. It causes leaf particles to realistically drift down from tree canopies, mimicking the natural behavior of falling foliage. Unlike vanilla Minecraft, where leaves are static, this mod breathes life into biomes by adding movement and environmental depth.

Key Features

  • Dynamic Particles: Leaves fall randomly from foliage blocks and drift toward the ground.
  • Environmental Interaction: Particles are affected by wind and will settle on the surface of the ground or water for a short duration before disappearing.
  • Broad Compatibility: Works with all vanilla leaf types and most modded trees (e.g., BYG, Biomes O' Plenty).
  • Highly Configurable: Users can adjust spawn rates, particle sizes, and wind effects to suit their preference.
  • Client-Side Only: This mod does not need to be installed on a server for multiplayer use; it only affects the player's visual experience.

Configuration

Every setting in the mod config file, with what it changes.

OptionWhat it does
alwaysUseVanillaParticlesAlways Use "Vanilla" Particle ImplementationNote that vanilla particles are unaffected by: Leaf Size, Life Span, Needed vertical space, and Wind.
cherrySpawnRateCherry Petals Spawn RateChanges the vanilla cherry petals spawn rate in factors of 10%, i.e. 5 = 50% (half rate) 10 = 100% (original rate) 20 = 200% (double rate)
coniferLeafSpawnRateHow many conifer leaves spawn over time
decaySpawnRateFactorDecaying Leaf Spawn Rate MultiplierAdjusts the spawn rate of leaves which are about to decay.
windEnabledEnable Wind? There's always some amount of wind, this option allows for stronger wind
fallSpawnRateFactorFall Spawn Rate MultiplierFor Fabric Seasons and Serene Seasons
leafLifespanLeaf Life Span (in Ticks)20 ticks are roughly 1 second
leafSpawnRateHow many leaves spawn over time
startingSpawnRadiusMinimal Spawn RadiusLeaves will not spawn inside this radius around the player.
minimumFreeSpaceBelowNeeded vertical space (in half-blocks)Leaves only fall from a block if there's enough free space below it
paleOakSpawnRatePale Oak Leaves Spawn RateChanges the vanilla Pale Oak leaves spawn rate in factors of 10%, i.e. 5 = 50% (half rate) 10 = 100% (original rate) 20 = 200% (double rate)
particle_implementation"Vanilla" refers to the use of a vanilla method, which mods may use as well to add their own implementation. "Regular", "Conifer" and "Cherry" are custom implementations. "Cherry" is close to the vanilla implementation and uses vanilla textures.
registerParticlesRegister Leaf ParticlesAllows the /particle command to be used (in singleplayer). Can cause issues when hosting LAN servers (e.g. via Essential) when the client doesn't have Falling Leaves installed. Changing this setting requires a restart.
snowflakeSpawnRateHow many snowflakes fall from snowy trees over time
spawn_rate_factorSpawn Rate Multiplier0% turns spawning off, 100% means base spawn rate
useVanillaTexturesThis applies to the "Regular" Particle Implementation
leafSpawnersAdditional block states that drop leavesAdds extra block states that also spawn falling leaf particles
is_coniferAre these conifer leaves?Marks these leaves as conifer type, changing their falling leaf appearance
maxDecayLeavesDecayed Leaf Max. Spawn CountCaps how many leaf particles spawn when a leaf block decays
dropFromPlayerPlacedBlocksDrop leaves from player-placed blocks?Allows player-placed leaf blocks to drop falling leaves
leavesOnBlockHitDrop some leaves when hitting a block?Makes leaf blocks emit some falling leaves when hit
spawn_breaking_leavesDrop some leaves when this block is hit or decays?Makes this block drop leaves when hit or when it decays
enabledTurns the falling leaves effect on or off
leafSizeSets the size of the falling leaf particles

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn on falling leaves?
The mod is client-side and works automatically once installed, so leaves will start falling beneath trees without any setup. If you see nothing, check that particles are enabled in your video settings and that the mod's own particle toggle in its config isn't disabled.
Does Falling Leaves work on servers, or only singleplayer?
Because it's client-side, it works on any server you join without the server needing the mod. Other players won't see your leaves, and you'll only see particles for trees the server actually sends to your client.
Why do leaves only fall under some trees?
The mod spawns particles beneath leaf blocks, so trees with few or no leaf blocks (like stripped or bare builds) won't produce them. It also respects your biome and tree filters if you've configured any.
How do I change how many leaves fall?
Open the mod's config and adjust the particle density setting to make leaves fall more or less often. Lower values mean sparser leaves, higher values mean a denser shower.
