No, bubble columns pass through copper grates at any oxidation stage—unoxidized, partially oxidized, fully oxidized, or waxed. You can use whichever variant fits your build aesthetic.
Can I use copper grates with soul sand elevators in my existing water tube?
Yes, you can retrofit old elevators by placing a copper grate directly above the soul sand, then filling the column above as normal. The grate hides the soul sand while maintaining full elevator speed.
What happens if I place the copper grate too high above the soul sand?
The bubble column effect will stop before reaching the grate if there's a gap—the grate must be placed directly adjacent (one block above) the soul sand or magma block to work.
