Frequently asked questions

How do I make my first animal pen?
Craft an Animal Pen using the recipe shown in the mod wiki, then place it in the world. Right-click the pen to open its interface, then use a lead or name tag on an animal to add it to the pen.
Can I breed animals inside pens?
Yes, animals can breed inside pens just like they do in the open world. Feed two penned animals their preferred food items, and they'll produce offspring that also goes into the pen.
How do I get milk or wool from penned animals?
Right-click a penned cow with a bucket to collect milk, or right-click a penned sheep with shears to collect wool. The resources appear in your inventory just as if the animal were loose.
What's the difference between pens and containers?
Pens are block-based storage you place in the world and interact with directly, while containers are portable inventory items. Both store animals, but containers let you carry multiple animals without taking up block space.
Can I store fish and aquatic animals?
Yes, the mod supports both land and aquatic animals. Place a water-filled container or pen and add fish, axolotls, or other water mobs the same way you would land animals.
How do variants and labels work?
Variants let you store different color or type variations of the same animal in separate slots within one pen. Labels let you name your pens so you can organize multiple pens and quickly identify what's stored in each.
Do penned animals still count toward lag?
No, stored animals are not active entities in the world, so they don't cause lag. This is the main benefit of using pens instead of keeping large farms of loose animals.
Can I use pens with bees?
Yes, bees can be stored in pens with special interactions. Penned bees can still produce honey and pollinate, depending on the pen's setup and proximity to flowers.
What happens if I break a pen with animals inside?
Breaking a pen drops it as an item with all stored animals still inside. You can place the pen again and recover your animals, or craft a container to transfer them.
Do I need to feed animals inside pens?
No, penned animals don't need food to survive. They only need food when you want to breed them or trigger specific interactions like milking or shearing.
