Food data packs assemble new meals out of items the game already has, since a data pack cannot register a genuinely new item. The usual approach uses custom model data on an existing base item, so a cake, bowl or bottle becomes a new dish with its own texture and effects. Packs add cooked meals, baked goods, drinks and snacks, expand campfire and smoker recipes, and adjust hunger or saturation values.
