The Capture Net is the single most useful tool in Naturalist. It lets you pick up a live animal and carry it to a new location, which is essential for building a zoo, relocating a pest, or rescuing a mob from danger.

Capturing an Animal

1. Craft a Capture Net (check the mod's crafting recipes in JEI/REI — it uses common materials).

2. Approach the animal and right-click it with the net. If the mob is capturable, it disappears into the net and the item's tooltip shows which animal you are holding.

3. Carry the filled net to where you want the animal to live.

4. Right-click the ground (or a block) with the filled net to release the animal.

What You Can and Cannot Capture

Small and medium wildlife — rats, hedgehogs, lizards, snakes, birds, insects, and similar — are the usual targets. Very large animals may not fit in a net, so plan enclosures around them instead. Fish are handled differently: use a Bucket to scoop up anglerfish, bass, catfish, blobfish, piranha, rays, starfish, jellyfish, and giant isopods.

Building a Display

  • Combine nets with Froglass panes to make see-through enclosures that look like a real zoo.
  • Use Shellstone and its brick, cut, and smooth variants for the enclosure walls.
  • Release animals one at a time so you can position each one deliberately.
