Taming in Naturalist is not a single universal system — different animals use different methods, and many mobs cannot be tamed at all. Before you spend resources, identify the animal and check what it actually accepts.
General Taming Approach
Most tameable wildlife is won over with food, not with a saddle or a command. The reliable pattern is:
1. Craft or obtain a
Capture Net so you can safely move animals you have already befriended.
2. Hold the correct food item in your main hand and approach slowly — sprinting or hitting the animal will scare it off.
3. Right-click the animal repeatedly with the food. A successful tame usually shows hearts or a change in behaviour (the mob stops fleeing and follows you).
4. Once tamed, many animals can be told to sit, follow, or wander using an interaction key or by right-clicking them again.
Which Animals Can Be Tamed
Bears, snakes, rats,
hedgehogs, lizards, and several other small critters are the common targets players ask about. Large animals like giraffes, lions, elephants, rhinos, and mammoths are generally not tameable — they are wild wildlife you observe, avoid, or capture for display. Ducks, ostriches, and tortoises are bred rather than tamed.
If right-clicking with food does nothing, that animal is not tameable in this mod. Do not waste stacks of food testing — check the mob's entry first.
