Breeding in Naturalist follows vanilla-style rules: two adults of the same species, fed the right food, produce a baby. The tricky part is knowing which food each bird wants and keeping them from wandering off.
Feeding and Breeding Birds
1. Build a fenced enclosure — birds can fly or flutter over low walls, so use a roof or tall fence.
2. Obtain the breeding food. Ducks, turkeys, and similar birds typically accept seeds (wheat seeds and similar).
3. Right-click two adult birds with the food until hearts appear above both.
4. They will path toward each other and produce a baby. The baby grows over time and can be sped up by feeding it more of the same food.
Eggs and Nests
Some birds lay eggs instead of instantly producing a baby. Ducks lay eggs that can be collected, and ostriches produce large
Ostrich Eggs you can pick up. Alligator, tortoise, and
snail eggs work the same way — collect them and place them where you want the young to hatch.
Practical Tips
- Keep a chest of seeds next to your coop so you never run out mid-breed.
- Separate species into different pens; mixed pens make it hard to tell which bird is ready to breed.
- Use a
Capture Net to move a bird without killing it if you need to relocate your flock.
