Many players assume the compass only works in the Overworld, but it can help in other dimensions too — with caveats.
Dimension Behavior
When you enter the Nether or the End, the biome list changes to reflect the biomes available in that dimension. In the Nether you'll see entries like Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, and Warped Forest. In the End, the available biomes are limited, so the compass is less useful there but still functional. If you try to search for an Overworld-only biome while in the Nether, the compass won't be able to point you anywhere.
Switching Targets
Open the interface again after changing dimensions and pick a biome that exists where you are. The compass will then point toward the nearest instance of that biome in your current dimension. Distances in the Nether are compressed relative to the Overworld, so a short Nether trip can correspond to a long Overworld journey — keep that in mind when planning.
When It Won't Help
If the biome you want simply doesn't generate in the dimension you're in, no amount of searching will make the compass point to it. In that case, return to the Overworld and search there. The compass is a navigation aid, not a teleporter, so you still have to do the walking.
