You automatically receive a random quirk when you first join a world. Check your Quirk Notebook (press N) to see which ability you've been granted and read its description.

Normal attacks use ground and air combos (Kick Launch, Rising Fist, etc.) that you perform by pressing attack in specific directions. Hero Mode attacks are special techniques you unlock and switch between with R + scroll wheel, then activate with left-click or G for extra power.
