The Abyssal Altar is a functional block from Alex's Caves used for the mod's ritual-style crafting. It's the centerpiece of several progression steps, so learning to use it early saves a lot of confusion.

Placing and Activating

Craft or obtain an Abyssal Altar and place it on a flat surface in a safe area. The altar needs specific input items placed on or around it to trigger its effect. Check the mod's in-game recipe viewer (JEI or REI) for the exact inputs, since the altar's recipes are not shown in a normal crafting table.

What It Produces

Feeding the correct combination into the Abyssal Altar produces the mod's advanced materials and items. The altar is tied to the deeper progression of the mod, so you'll typically need it after you've already gathered base resources like Amber and Abyssmarine. Build a small dedicated room for your altar with chests nearby for inputs and outputs, and light it well — the areas where you find the altar's ingredients are hostile, and you don't want to lose your setup to a mob spawn.
