Sophisticated Wolves Mod — Guide
Wolf AI & Behavior
The primary feature of the mod is the complete rewrite of the wolf's decision-making processes. These changes make wolves significantly more autonomous and less of a liability during exploration.
Hazard Avoidance
Sophisticated Wolves are highly aware of their environment. They will actively avoid: * Lava and Fire: Wolves will pathfind around heat sources and will not jump into lava pools. * Cacti: Wolves recognize cactus blocks as dangerous and will maintain a safe distance. * Fall Damage: Wolves will calculate pathfinding to avoid drops that would cause significant damage. * Water: If a wolf is on fire, it will prioritize finding water to extinguish itself.
Combat Logic
Wolves are more tactical in battle. They are less likely to get in the way of the player's sword swings (preventing accidental friendly fire) and will prioritize targets more effectively. They also have improved pathfinding to reach enemies that are behind obstacles or on different elevations.
Interaction & States
Wolves have three primary states that can be toggled by right-clicking: 1. Following: The wolf follows the player and teleports if the distance is too great (standard behavior). 2. Sitting: The wolf stays in one spot and will not teleport. 3. Wandering: The wolf stays within a specific radius of its Dog Bed or a designated area, acting as a guard dog without being tethered to the player's immediate movement.
Mechanics
Taming and Naming
Taming remains similar to vanilla (using bones), but once tamed, wolves gain a more detailed interface. Players can name their wolves without the strict requirement of a Name Tag in some versions, or use the Name Tag to open a custom naming GUI that displays the wolf's current health and stats.
Breeding
Breeding in Sophisticated Wolves is more nuanced. Pups will inherit the traits of their parents, including health pools and certain AI tendencies. Pups also have a faster growth rate when fed specific treats.
Health Management
Wolves have a visible health indicator (often represented by the tail angle, but more precise in the mod's UI). Using Meaty Treats allows a wolf to exceed the standard 20-HP (10 heart) limit, potentially reaching up to 40-HP (20 hearts) to survive late-game encounters with stronger mobs.
