What the colors mean
Name Pain tints a nameplate based on how much health the entity currently has, so you can read a fight without opening any GUI. The scale runs from full health down to near death, shifting through a spectrum as the entity takes damage. Instead of memorizing exact numbers, train yourself to read the trend: a nameplate that has barely changed color is a healthy target, while one that has drifted toward the danger end of the spectrum is close to dropping.
Using it in combat
- Watch the nameplate above a mob as you hit it. The color shift tells you whether you are close to the kill or just getting started.
- For players in PvP, a nameplate sliding toward the low-health end is your cue to commit to the finishing hit rather than backing off.
- For pets and villagers, the same coloring applies, so you can spot an injured
companion in a crowd instantly. - Because the coloring is gradual rather than a hard on/off switch, you get a continuous read on health instead of a single threshold warning.
Why this matters
Vanilla nameplates tell you nothing about health. With Name Pain, a glance upward during a fight gives you the same information a health bar would, without adding clutter to your screen. Practice on passive mobs first so the color transitions become second nature before you rely on them in real fights.
