Reading the Light Numbers

The light level display shows two values: block light (from torches, lava, glowstone) and sky light (from the sky, reduced by depth). Hostile mobs spawn when the effective light at a block is low enough — the exact threshold depends on the mob and difficulty, but the practical rule is: keep the higher of the two values above the spawn threshold everywhere you do not want mobs.

Enable the light level line in the MiniHUD config, then walk your base. The number updates as you move, so you can spot dark corners instantly.

Using the Light Level Overlay

MiniHUD also offers a light level overlay that paints numbers or colored markers on blocks around you. Turn it on in the config and set a radius. Blocks below the safe threshold get highlighted, so you can sweep a room and see exactly which tiles need a torch.

Tips:

  • Stand still while reading — the overlay only covers blocks within its radius.
  • Combine with the coordinates line so you can note problem spots.
  • For caves and mob farms, the overlay is faster than placing torches blindly.

This is the single most popular reason players install MiniHUD, and it works entirely client-side — no server changes needed.
