Frequently asked questions

How do I get started with sailing ships?
Place Mast and Yard blocks to form your ship's frame, then right-click a Yard with a Cotton Sail or Canvas Sail in hand and click the opposite corner to rig the cloth between them. Once rigged, wind will push your ship forward based on sail trim and wind direction.
Why is my ship sliding sideways instead of moving forward?
You need to place Keel blocks along the bottom of your hull beneath the waterline—they eliminate sideways drift and help your ship grip the water. Stack multiple keels for larger ships to increase their effect.
How do I turn my ship?
Place Rudder blocks vertically along your ship's stern and connect them to a rotating shaft using Create's mechanical systems. Stack multiple rudders for larger ships to increase turning power, and the rudder will rotate your ship from 0 to 360 degrees.
What's the difference between Cotton Sails and Canvas Sails?
Cotton Sails are lightweight and respond quickly to wind changes, while Canvas Sails are heavier and provide more durability. Both can be dyed to customize your ship's appearance.
How do I check the wind speed and direction at my location?
Use the Anemometer tool to measure wind speed and the Wind Vane tool to track wind direction, or run the command `/aerowind query` to see wind speed, direction, temperature, and air pressure at your current coordinates.
Does wind change with altitude?
Yes—wind speed increases naturally at higher altitudes, with strong jet streams at the top of the world. This means flying ships and gliders will experience stronger winds the higher you go.
How do I use the Wind Rider glider?
Equip the Wind Rider glider and jump into the air to begin gliding; you'll ride active air currents across the sky. The glider works best in areas with strong wind, especially at high altitudes.
Can I control the weather manually?
Yes—use `/aeroweather set <type> <intensity> [duration]` to set regional weather conditions, or `/aeroweather query` to check the current weather. You can also use `/aerowind set <speed> <bearing>` to manually set wind conditions.
How do I trim my sails for better control?
Right-click on rigged sail cloth to reef (roll up) the sail when not in use, and use ropes for continuous sail trimming to adjust how much sail area catches the wind. This lets you fine-tune your ship's speed and handling.
Where do I find cotton to make sails?
Wild cotton plants generate naturally across warm biomes, in shipwrecks, and in villages. Harvest them to obtain cotton for crafting Cotton Sails and Canvas Sails.
