Citadel is a library / API mod. It adds no creatures, blocks, or items of its own - instead it provides a powerful toolbox of shared code that other mods build on top of. The most well-known mod that depends on it is Alex's Mobs, but many other content mods use Citadel for animation and utility support.
What Citadel provides:
a keyframe animation framework for smooth, complex entity animations,
advanced entity model and render helpers,
a persistent entity data-attachment system for storing custom data on entities,
a configurable in-game guidebook system with 3D entity and recipe previews,
post-processing shader effects,
and common networking, registration, and utility helpers.
Because it is a dependency, it is present in your game only because another mod relies on it.
Citadel is a library mod that other mods depend on, so it adds no blocks, items, or mobs you can use on its own. If you see it in your mod list, it's there because another mod needs its animation, model, and rendering systems.
How do I know if citadel is working?
You won't see it in your inventory or creative tabs, since it has no gameplay content. The real test is whether the mods that depend on it load and animate correctly instead of crashing on startup.
Do I need to install citadel separately?
Yes, it's a standalone dependency, not bundled into the mods that use it. If a mod's page lists Citadel as required, you need both files in your mods folder.
Why does my game crash and mention citadel?
Citadel usually appears in a crash log because a dependent mod fed it a broken model, animation, or config. The fault is almost always the mod using Citadel, not Citadel itself, so check the lines above the Citadel entry.
What is the citadel book and how do I open it?
The Citadel Book is an in-game reference for the library's systems, mainly useful to mod developers and pack makers. It's not a survival guide, so don't expect recipes or progression from it.
What does the citadel debugger do?
The debugger toggles developer overlays for things like hitboxes, animation states, and model rendering. It's a troubleshooting tool for figuring out why a mob looks or moves wrong, not something you use during normal play.
My mobs are frozen or T-posing, is that citadel's fault?
Frozen or T-posing mobs usually mean the animation data failed to load, which is a problem in the mod that owns the mob. Citadel just plays the animations it's given, so reinstall or update the mob's mod first.
Does citadel hurt performance?
Citadel itself is lightweight, but it powers animation and model systems that can be heavy when many animated entities are on screen. If your FPS drops around specific mobs, that's the dependent mod's rendering cost, not Citadel idling in the background.
Can I use citadel on a server?
Yes, but it must be installed on both the server and every client, since it's a code library, not a server-side utility. A client missing it will be rejected or crash when joining.
Is citadel the same as the citadel paints or miniatures?
No, that's a completely different Citadel, the tabletop paint and miniature brand. Searches for Citadel paints, contrast paint, or plastic glue have nothing to do with this Minecraft mod.
