Backpack tiers

Tier Slots Notes
Baby Backpack 3 The starter pouch, made from leather and a chest
Frayed Backpack 9 Dyeable — colour it like leather armour
Plated Backpack 18 Reinforced with iron
Gilded Backpack 27 Gold-trimmed, same size as a single chest
Bejeweled Backpack 36 Diamond-studded
Blazing Backpack 45 Fireproof — survives lava
Withered Backpack 54 Wither-touched, a double chest on your back
Endless Backpack 108 The largest tier, several chests in one item
Ender Pouch Opens your ender chest from anywhere

Slot counts come from the config file and can be changed, so a server can make the tiers larger or smaller to taste.

Opening and wearing

There are three ways to open a backpack:

  • Right-click it while holding it.
  • Press the key bind (default B), which opens the first backpack it finds on you — including one worn in the armour slot.
  • Right-click the ender pouch to open your ender chest instead.

A backpack can be placed in the chest armour slot. Worn like that it renders on your character's back for everyone to see, and it still opens with the key bind, so you get storage without giving up a hand or a hotbar slot. Whether backpacks may go in the chest slot at all is a config option.

Multiplayer and worlds

Backpack contents are stored on the item itself, so they travel with the item: drop it, put it in a chest, or hand it to another player and the storage goes with it.

On a server the mod must be installed on both sides — the server owns the backpack inventory and the client draws the screen and the backpack on your back. Config values that affect gameplay, such as tier sizes and the blacklist, are read from the server's config file.

On death, inventory backpacks spill their contents by default so nothing is lost inside an item that might despawn; a worn backpack keeps its contents unless you turn that option on too.

Tips

  • Dye a frayed backpack to colour-code your storage — one colour for ores, another for building blocks.
  • The blazing tier is the safest choice for nether trips because it does not burn up if you drop it.
  • Wearing a backpack in the chest slot and using the key bind is the fastest workflow while mining: no hotbar slot spent, one key to open.
  • An ender pouch pairs well with a big backpack: bulk goods in the pack, valuables in the ender chest.
  • If a server feels the tiers are too generous, shrink them in the config rather than removing the mod — the recipes stay the same.

Crafting and upgrading

The first backpack is crafted from leather around a chest:

 [L]
[L][C][L]
 [L]

Each later tier is the previous backpack surrounded by that tier's material — iron for plated, gold for gilded, diamond for bejeweled, blaze rods for blazing, and so on. The recipe book lists the exact pattern for every tier once you have the ingredients.

Upgrading keeps your items. When a filled backpack is used in an upgrade recipe, everything inside is copied into the new one, so you never have to empty a backpack before improving it.
