By default they spawn in lava pools in both the Overworld and the Nether, in lava at least two blocks deep that contains a source block. Their spawning conditions can be customized in the mod's properties file.

Lava Monsters are weak to water and die if they come into contact with it. They can also be bucketed, which deals half of their max health in damage.

The mod creates a properties file where you can disable Nether spawning, enable Depth Hazard Mode to restrict them below layer 16, allow spawning in flowing lava, allow spawning in one-block-deep lava, and control spawn frequency.
