Why "Unexplored" Matters
The Explorer's Compass is designed to point you toward structures you have not yet discovered. It searches the world for generated structures of the type you select and aims at the closest one, even if it is far outside your current map. This makes it ideal for
early-game exploration when you have no idea where the nearest village or temple is.
Step-by-Step Exploration
1. Craft the compass and open its selection screen.
2. Choose a structure you actually want to visit — a village for trading, a temple for loot, a stronghold for progression.
3. Note the starting distance so you can gauge how far you are committing to travel.
4. Follow the needle, checking the distance periodically. If it stops decreasing, you may have walked past the structure or hit terrain that blocks the straight-line path.
5. When the distance reaches zero, look around — the structure should be within render distance, possibly underground or underwater.
Handling Tricky Targets
Some structures generate below the surface (strongholds, mineshafts) or under water (ocean monuments). The compass points to their horizontal location, not their depth, so once you are on top of the spot you may need to dig down or dive. For underground structures, bring a pickaxe and torches. For ocean monuments, bring water breathing potions or a conduit.
