Selecting Your Target
The whole point of the Explorer's Compass is picking one structure type and letting it guide you there. Right-click with the compass in hand to open the search GUI. Type into the search box to filter the list — for example, type "strong" to jump straight to Stronghold, or "village" to find Villages. Click the entry you want and close the screen.
Reading the Readout
Once a target is set, the compass shows two
things: the needle direction and a distance value. The needle always points to the nearest matching structure in your current dimension. If the structure you want is in another dimension (for example, a Nether fortress or an End city), the compass will not guide you across dimensions — travel to that dimension first, then re-select the target.
Tips for Long Journeys
- The compass only tracks structures that actually generated. If a structure type is disabled in your world or datapack, it will not appear in the list.
- Distance is measured in a straight line, not along a path, so expect to detour around oceans and mountains.
- If the needle seems stuck, make sure you have not accidentally selected a structure that does not exist in this dimension.
- Bring a bed, food, and spare blocks — some targets are thousands of
blocks away.
