Frequently asked questions

How do I get started with the Essentials Mod?
Craft a few of the mod's core blocks first — Fertile Soil, a faster hopper, and the wireless Redstone components — since these cover farming, item transport, and automation. Check the mod's recipe book entries in JEI/REI to see exact ingredients, as many recipes reuse vanilla materials like Redstone, iron, and pistons.
How does Fertile Soil work?
Place Fertile Soil and plant the matching crop or sapling directly on top; it stays hydrated without water and can't be trampled by mobs or players. When the crop above it is harvested and the block is left empty, Fertile Soil will automatically replant the same seed at random intervals.
Why isn't my Fertile Soil replanting crops?
Replanting only triggers when the block above the soil is completely empty — if a partial crop, item entity, or any other block is sitting there, it won't replant. Also make sure you're using the correct variant (wheat soil for wheat, carrot soil for carrots, and so on), since each variant only handles its own plant.
Do I need water or light for Fertile Soil crops to grow?
No water is needed — Fertile Soil keeps crops hydrated on its own, so you can farm in dry or underground areas. Normal light requirements for crop growth still apply, so add torches or another light source if you're farming in the dark.
How do I set up wireless Redstone?
Place a transmitter on the input side and a receiver on the output side, then link them so the receiver mirrors the transmitter's signal. Once linked, powering the transmitter toggles the receiver's output without any Redstone dust running between them, which is useful for long-distance or cross-dimension-style setups.
My wireless Redstone isn't working — what's wrong?
The most common causes are unlinked or mismatched transmitter/receiver pairs, or two pairs sharing the same channel and interfering with each other. Re-link the pair and give each circuit its own frequency so signals don't cross.
How do faster hoppers differ from vanilla hoppers?
They move items at a higher throughput than a vanilla hopper, so they're ideal for feeding farms, sorting systems, or furnaces that would otherwise back up. They still connect to inventories the same way, so you can usually swap them in where a vanilla hopper was bottlenecking your line.
How do I get obsidian without grinding with a diamond pickaxe?
The mod adds a faster obsidian-obtaining method so you don't have to mine it block by block with a diamond pickaxe. Check the mod's obsidian-related block or item in JEI/REI to see the recipe and setup, then route water and lava into it to produce obsidian automatically.
Can I use Essentials Mod blocks alongside other tech or automation mods?
Yes — the mod's blocks use standard inventory and Redstone interfaces, so faster hoppers, wireless Redstone, and auto-crafting tables generally interoperate with pipes, cables, and other automation from other mods. If something doesn't connect, try inserting a vanilla hopper or chest as a buffer between the two systems.
Will a lot of Fertile Soil or faster hoppers hurt my performance?
Fertile Soil does a random tick check for replanting, and large fields of it plus many fast hoppers can add up on a busy server. If you notice lag, spread farms out, avoid stacking hundreds of fast hoppers in one chunk, and consider turning off auto-replant on soil you don't need it on.
