What the Overlay Shows

When you have AppleSkin installed, the vanilla hunger bar becomes more informative. Instead of just seeing your drumstick icons, you also get visual cues for your hidden saturation value. Saturation is the buffer that gets consumed before your actual hunger points start dropping, so knowing it helps you decide when to eat.

Reading the Bars

Watch the hunger bar as you eat and take damage. AppleSkin renders additional icons or shading on top of the standard hunger icons to represent your current saturation level. The saturation display typically appears as a second layer of icons or a colored overlay behind the normal drumsticks. When saturation is high, you will see more of these extra icons; as it drains, they disappear before your regular hunger points do.

Practical Use

Eat foods with high saturation value when you are about to do something demanding, like mining a long tunnel or fighting mobs, because that buffer keeps your hunger from dropping quickly. If you see your saturation icons are gone but your hunger bar is still full, you are running on empty reserves and should eat soon. This lets you avoid the sudden hunger drop that catches players off guard during combat or sprinting.
