Question 1

How do I actually play a YouTube video on a screen in Minecraft?

Accepted Answer

Place a WaterMedia screen, then use the screen's URL or media command to paste a YouTube link. The YouTube plugin intercepts the link and hands it to NewPipeExtractor, which resolves the stream and starts playback on the screen.

Question 2

Why won't my YouTube link load even though the plugin is installed?

Accepted Answer

Most failures come from the plugin not being loaded alongside WaterMedia, or from a link format NewPipeExtractor can't resolve, such as a shortened or region-locked URL. Try the full watch URL and confirm the plugin jar sits in the same mods folder as WaterMedia.

Question 3

Do I need the YouTube plugin if WaterMedia already plays videos?

Accepted Answer

Yes for YouTube specifically. WaterMedia handles the screen and playback framework, but it does not ship YouTube extraction on its own, so the plugin is what actually resolves YouTube links into playable streams.

Question 4

Can I play just the audio from a YouTube video through speakers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Point a WaterMedia speaker at the same YouTube URL and it will pull the audio stream instead of rendering video, so you can use it for music or radio-style setups without a screen.

Question 5

What does NewPipeExtractor do and why does the mod use it?

Accepted Answer

NewPipeExtractor is the engine that reads YouTube pages and pulls out the direct stream URLs. The plugin uses it because it keeps working when YouTube changes its site, without the mod needing a full rewrite each time.

Question 6

How do I update the plugin when YouTube videos suddenly stop working?

Accepted Answer

Replace the plugin jar with a newer build, since the fix usually lives in an updated NewPipeExtractor. If a fresh build still fails, the break is upstream and you'll need to wait for the extractor to catch up.

Question 7

Does this work on a server, or only in singleplayer?

Accepted Answer

It works on servers as long as the plugin is installed on the server side, since extraction happens there. Clients that don't have it may still see the screen, but playback resolution is handled by the server.

Question 8

Can I play a YouTube livestream or a playlist?

Accepted Answer

Livestreams generally work because NewPipeExtractor resolves the live manifest, though buffering depends on your connection. Playlists are not treated as a single media item, so you typically queue videos one URL at a time.

Question 9

Why does the video stutter or take a long time to start?

Accepted Answer

Extraction adds a short delay before playback begins, and high-resolution streams need more bandwidth than Minecraft normally uses. Lowering the requested quality or using a wired connection usually smooths it out.

Question 10

Will this conflict with other video or media mods I have installed?

Accepted Answer

Conflicts are rare because the plugin patches into WaterMedia rather than replacing it, but two mods both trying to handle YouTube URLs can fight over the same link. If playback misbehaves, remove other YouTube-handling mods and test again.
