Chat Heads works on servers, but a few common situations make it look broken. Work through these before assuming the mod failed.
Remember it's client-side only
Because Chat Heads runs entirely on your client, the server never needs to know about it. That also means the server cannot enable it for you — if heads aren't showing, the fix is always on your end. Don't ask server staff to install a plugin; there isn't one required for the client-side feature.
Common causes on multiplayer
- Wrong game instance. If you launch through a different profile than the one with the mod, it simply won't load.
- Mod not enabled. Some launchers let you disable mods without removing them. Check the toggle.
- Config reset. Switching instances or updating can reset settings, turning head display back off.
- Skin loading. On servers with many players, skins fetch slowly. Heads may be blank for a while after you join.
Verify it's working
Join any world — singleplayer counts — and type a chat message. If your own head appears next to it, the mod is functioning and the issue is specific to that server's chat format. Some servers rewrite chat heavily with plugins, which can interfere with how messages are parsed. In that case, try toggling any "compatibility" or chat-format option in the config, and report the server's chat plugin behavior if the problem persists.
