Better Beginnings Mod 1.10.2, — Reference
Core Mechanics
No Punching Trees
In Better Beginnings, the player's hands are not tools. Attempting to break logs, stone, or other hard blocks with bare fists will result in the player taking damage (representing 'durability' loss of the character) and the block will not drop any items.
Tool Requirements
Most blocks now require a specific tool tier and type to harvest. Using the wrong tool will result in the tool losing significant durability without breaking the block.
Advanced Crafting & Catalysts
Standard crafting is limited to basic items. For tools, armor, and machinery, players must use the Advanced Crafting Table. This table features four additional slots for Catalysts—supplementary materials required to complete a recipe. Common catalysts include: * Leather Strips: Used for binding handles and grips. * Iron Nuggets: Used as rivets for metal tools and armor. * Wool: Used as padding for armor sets. * String / Twine: Used for light binding and tool assembly.

Tools and Weapons
Bone Tier
Before you can mine stone, you must craft Bone Tools. * Bone Shards: Obtained by whittling bones with a knife. * Bone Pickaxe: Crafted in the Advanced Crafting Table using Bone Shards, Sticks, and Leather Strips. This is the only tool capable of mining stone early in the game.

Metal Tiers
Once you have a Smelter, you can progress to Iron and beyond. Metal tools require Iron Nuggets as catalysts in the Advanced Crafting Table to represent the rivets holding the tool together.
Infusion Repair Station
This block replaces the vanilla Anvil for repairing enchanted equipment. It requires specific materials and experience to restore durability without losing enchantments.
Diffusion Extraction
This mechanic allows players to extract enchantments from existing tools, though it often consumes the tool in the process.

Mobs and Drops
Better Beginnings modifies mob drops to ensure players can progress even on lower difficulties.
- Peaceful Mode: All creatures (passive and hostile) have a chance to drop Bones when killed by the player, ensuring access to Bone Shards.
- Small Creatures: Chickens and Ocelots have a specific chance to drop Bone Shards directly.
- Skeletons: In Easy difficulty or higher, Skeletons remain the primary source of bones for rapid progression.
