Better Beginnings Mod 1.10.2, — Guide

Getting Started

1. Finding Flint

Your first goal is to find Gravel. It is commonly found in cave entrances, underwater, or on cliff faces. You can craft 4 gravel blocks into 1 piece of Flint. You will need at least 4 pieces of flint to begin your journey.

2. The Flint Knife

The Flint Knife is your most essential early-game tool. It is crafted in your 2x2 inventory grid using two pieces of flint placed diagonally.

Uses for the Knife: * Whittling: Combine a Knife with a Sapling to create Sticks. * Skinning: Combine a Knife with Leather to create Leather Strips. * Bone Processing: Combine a Knife with a Bone to create Bone Shards. * Harvesting: Functions like shears for grass and vines (vines can be whittled into Twine). * Combat: Deals damage comparable to a vanilla axe.

3. The Flint Hatchet

Once you have sticks and leather strips, you can craft a Flint Hatchet. This is the first tool capable of harvesting wood logs without damaging the player.

4. The Advanced Crafting Table

To progress beyond flint, you must create two vanilla-style crafting tables. When placed side-by-side, they merge into the Advanced Crafting Table. This block is required for almost all tool and armor recipes. If a recipe requires this table but is placed in a standard one, a red 'X' will appear over the output arrow.

Processing and Smelting

Better Beginnings replaces the universal functionality of the vanilla furnace with specialized blocks.

Block Purpose Common Recipes
Campfire Early-game cooking Raw Meat -> Cooked Meat
Kiln Smelting blocks and materials Sand -> Glass, Cobblestone -> Stone, Wood -> Charcoal
Smelter Processing Ores Iron Ore + Gravel -> Iron Ingot
Brick Oven Advanced Food Processing Dough -> Bread (Doubles output)

The Campfire

Created with logs and sticks, the campfire is your first source of heat. It must be lit using a Fire Bow or Flint and Steel. You can place a Frying Pan on it to cook food more efficiently.

The Kiln

The Kiln is used for 'firing' materials. It is essential for producing Charcoal, which serves as a primary fuel source since coal ore cannot be mined early on. Upgrading to an Obsidian Kiln increases smelting speed.

The Smelter

Smelters are used exclusively for ores. Unlike vanilla, smelting ores in Better Beginnings requires Gravel as a flux. * Iron/Gold: Requires 1 Gravel. * Diamond/Advanced Ores: Requires 3 Gravel. * Ender Smelter: An end-game upgrade that processes ores even faster.
