YUNG's Better Caves Mod — Guide

Cave Types

The mod utilizes two primary noise-based generation types to create distinct underground environments. These types are often interconnected, leading to a seamless transition between different subterranean landscapes.

Type 1: Sinuous Caves (Cubic Noise)

These caves are characterized by their long, winding, and turbulent nature. They resemble traditional "worm" caves but with significantly more variety in width and height. They are often cramped near the surface and become more complex as the player descends.

Type 2: Spacious Caves (Simplex Noise)

Type 2 caves focus on more open, room-like structures. They feature shorter winding passages that frequently open into large, bulbous chambers. These are ideal for players looking for large-scale underground bases or massive ore veins.

Specialized Caverns

Beyond standard tunnels, the mod generates specialized cavern biomes that drastically change the gameplay loop of caving.

Cavern Type Location Primary Fluid Description
Lava Caverns Low Altitudes (near Bedrock) Lava Massive, open rooms where the floor is replaced by vast lava lakes.
Flooded Caves Under Ocean/River Biomes Water Caves that are partially or entirely submerged, requiring aquatic gear to explore.
Underground Lakes Various Altitudes Water Large pockets of water that break up standard cave systems.
Underground Rivers Various Altitudes Water Long, flowing bodies of water that can span hundreds of blocks through tunnels.

Mechanics & World Generation

YUNG's Better Caves introduces several mechanical changes to how the world is structured:

  • Bedrock Flattening: By default, the mod replaces the jagged, multi-layered vanilla bedrock with a single, flat layer. This can be configured for both the Overworld and the Nether, providing a clean floor for mining and building.
  • Surface Openings: Cave entrances on the surface are more varied. Some appear as small cracks, while others are massive sinkholes leading directly into deep cavern systems.
  • Transition Logic: The mod features smooth transition boundaries between different cave types and cavern regions, preventing the appearance of "straight walls" or unnatural chunk borders.
  • Vanilla Integration: In modern versions (1.20.1+), the mod can be configured to generate alongside vanilla noise caves, combining the best of both generation styles for maximum variety.
