Multiblock Structures

Railcraft was a pioneer in multiblock structures—large machines made of multiple blocks that function as a single unit. These are essential for the mod's tech progression.

Core Structures

  • Coke Oven (3x3x3): Converts Coal into Coal Coke and Creosote Oil. Coal Coke is a superior fuel, and Creosote is required for crafting rail ties.
  • Blast Furnace (3x4x3): Uses Coal Coke to smelt Iron into Steel. Steel is a critical material for high-tier tracks and locomotives.
  • Steam Boiler: A modular structure (variable size) that generates massive amounts of steam from water and fuel. This steam can power engines or locomotives.
  • Iron/Steel Tank: Large, customizable fluid storage tanks. They can be built in various dimensions (up to 9x9x8) to store millions of millibuckets of liquid.
  • Rock Crusher (3x2x2): Crushes ores and blocks into dust or gravel, often providing secondary outputs like Crushed Obsidian.
  • Water Tank: Passively collects rainwater to provide a steady supply of water for boilers.

Tools and Equipment

Several specialized tools are required to maintain a Railcraft empire.

  • Crowbar: The most essential tool. It is used to link carts together into trains, change the direction of tracks, and instantly pick up rails or carts. Right-clicking a locomotive with a crowbar can also change its direction.
  • Whistle Tuner: Used to customize the whistle sound of your locomotives.
  • Magnifying Glass: Provides detailed information about Railcraft blocks and their current state (e.g., how much fuel is left in a boiler).
  • Goggles: When worn, they allow the player to see the wireless connections between signals and controllers.
