Portals are placed by aiming the gun at a valid surface and firing each portal color. The two portals form a single linked pair, so any entity, item, or projectile that enters one emerges from the other.
Momentum conservation is the key movement mechanic: speed carried into a portal is carried out of the linked portal. By placing one portal on the floor and another on a wall, a falling player is
redirected and launched horizontally, enabling long jumps and travel that would otherwise be impossible.
Cross-dimensional portals allow a player to maintain active portal pairs in multiple dimensions simultaneously, so the same gun can support several independent teleportation links at once.
Emancipation grids interact with the portal system by stripping carried items and closing portals that pass through them, which is how chamber designers force players to put down cubes before moving between sections.
