On newer servers, players using clients below 1.19.4 may find the smithing table unusable — the interface opens but crafting fails or the output slot stays empty. This is a known gap in how ViaBackwards translates the smithing menu.

Recognize the symptom

1. The player can place the smithing table and open it.

2. They insert the base item and the addition, but nothing appears in the result slot.

3. The same recipe works fine for a player on a newer client.

Apply the fix

1. Install the AxSmithing add-on alongside ViaBackwards. It restores smithing table functionality for older clients on newer servers.

2. Restart the server so the add-on loads.

3. Have the affected player reconnect and retry the recipe.

If it still fails

1. Confirm the player's client version — the add-on targets the range below 1.19.4.

2. Check the console for errors from the smithing add-on during the crafting attempt.

3. As a workaround, let a staff member on a newer client craft the item on the player's behalf until the issue is resolved.

Remember that other new mechanics beyond smithing may still be unavailable to these clients.
